In July of this year, we lost one of our founding partners and dearest friends, Dr. Paul H. Ray—visionary social researcher, systems thinker, and the originator of the groundbreaking Cultural Creatives study. His passing marks not just the loss of a brilliant mind but the departure of a soul deeply committed to humanity’s transformational potential.
Paul’s pioneering work illuminated a profound and previously hidden truth: that tens of millions of people were already living by values of sustainability, social justice, authenticity, and spiritual integration—quietly, and often invisibly. His research revealed that these individuals, though culturally marginalized by the dominant narratives of Modernity, were not fringe or anomalous. They were, in fact, a substantial and growing subculture—over 50 million adults in the U.S. alone at the time of the study, and later, over 90 million in Europe—united by what Paul called transformational values.
The Cultural Creatives were not merely trendsetters or consumers—they were (and are) cultural regenerators, artists of possibility, bridge-builders between worlds. Yet their presence went largely unacknowledged by mainstream institutions and media. Paul’s research gave them voice. It gave them numbers. It gave them to each other.
His work provided the foundational data for the LOHAS movement (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability), which went on to shape eco-conscious industries, conscious capitalism, and values-based entrepreneurship across the globe. His insights sparked the imaginations of leaders at Green America, Bioneers, and Green Business conferences, seeding new collaborations and communities devoted to regenerative futures.
In 2000, Paul and his wife and collaborator Sherry Ruth Anderson—also a founding partner of Integral Partnerships—co-authored Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People Are Changing the World. The book became a landmark text for those of us seeking to align our inner lives with outer action, and our private values with public change. It remains required reading for anyone who believes that culture can evolve—consciously, compassionately, and collectively.
As co-founders of Integral Partnerships, Paul and Sherry infused our work with the essence of what it means to develop—not just as individuals, but together—as a living culture of transformation. Their insights helped birth our frameworks for vertical development, fluidity of commitment, and regenerative enterprise design.
We grieve Paul's passing. And yet, we carry forward his legacy—with deep gratitude and even deeper resolve.
To those who identify as Cultural Creatives, LOHAS pioneers, or conscious changemakers: You are not alone. You never were. Paul's work showed us that. And his memory asks us now to continue what he began.
We will contact you shortly. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to meeting you.
